Just how foreign are foreign firms? Let’s examine a day in the life of an average American.
Rise and Shine If you’re like a lot of people, the first thing you do after rolling out of bed is seek out that all-important cup of coffee. Whether it’s a latte, cappuccino, mocha, or just a regular cup of joe, the day doesn’t really get started until the caffeine kicks in. But without foreign-grown coffee beans, consumers would have a tough time peeling themselves off the mattress. Virtually all the coffee we drink comes from foreign countries.
The main reason is climate. Coffee needs hotter climes than we have in most parts of the US, so it’s primarily grown closer to the equator. Hawaii’s climate is warm enough to yield great-tasting Kona coffee. But harvesting beans from the volcanic mountain slopes is challenging, so the amount of coffee produced by the 50th state isn’t nearly enough to keep the country’s heartbeat racing. Without imported coffee, we’d be paying a boatload for those scarce Kona beans.
