They say a carpenter is only as good as his tools. The same holds true for global investors. Chapter 7 of Own the World examines what Fisher Investments considers the most useful investing tools. Over $26 trillion is invested in mutual funds worldwide.* That’s almost half the size of global equity markets! But that doesn’t mean half the world’s stocks are owned in mutual funds. Equity mutual funds are most common, comprising about half the mutual fund market. But there are other types of mutual funds as well. Figure 7.1 in Fisher Investments Press’ Own the World shows how the mutual fund industry breaks down by fund type in the US.
No single product has opened the investing world to so many people as mutual funds. If you’re like most investors, you’ve probably owned a mutual fund or two at some point. Sometimes you don’t have a choice. Many employers restrict trading to mutual funds in retirement accounts such as 401(k)s or 403(b)s. Since these are the main investment vehicles for many folks, they’re forced to invest in mutual funds. But Fisher Investments feels mutual funds aren’t just for retirement accounts. Mutual funds are fine options for many people in lots of different portfolios.
